Magnitude 5.1 earthquake recorded near Cikobia

The Fiji Seismology Section states an earthquake measuring magnitude 5.1 was recorded approximately 41 kilometers east-southeast of Nalele Village on Cikobia Island.

It was at a shallow depth of 9 kilometers and occurred at 6:12pm

Authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate tsunami threat to the Fiji region arising from this seismic event.

Fiji Seismology is requesting members of the public who felt the earthquake to assist with data collection by providing feedback on their experience.

The information will help scientists better assess ground shaking and its impacts.

Members of the public are asked to describe how many seconds the shaking was felt, whether any sounds were heard, such as rumbling, the type of shaking experienced (short, long, swaying, or sharp) and if any damage observed, including items falling from shelves or movement of furniture

Reports can be shared with Fiji Seismology through the usual official reporting channels.
